PlayStation has kicked off the official week of PlayStation’s proper 30th anniversary with a huge console update that brings some iconic goodies to the PS5 for a limited time only.

Once you restart your PS5, you’ll be greeted with the iconic PlayStation 1 boot screen in glorious 4K. You’ll then be taken through a little tutorial that tells you that you can change themes based on all four classic PlayStation consoles and a special 30th anniversary theme.

Each of the console generations have their own unique backgrounds with nods to that console as well as the original sounds that the console had, which is a super nice touch.

The bad news is that these things will only be available for a limited time, so definitely get to your PS5 and enjoy them before they disappear, as it’s a super cool touch.

The official PlayStation 30th anniversary is this week and PlayStation has announced a PlayStation Store sale with a bunch of games to help celebrate three decades of PlayStation.

The sale has just kicked off and will last until December 21st. Because it’s just gone live, we don’t have a list of prices yet, but if you go to the PlayStation Store and visit for the listing for any of the below games, you’ll see the new prices.

Looking at the list, the sale doesn’t exactly scream 30th Anniversary with not a lot of retro games/PlayStation classics included. The original Ape Escape is down to $10.46 though, which is 30% off, so I highly recommend playing that if you haven’t already. 

There’s obviously a lot of newer PlaySTation games such as God of War, Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 on the list. Gran Turismo is 58% off along with The Last Of Us Part 1 and Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy is 60% off.

It’s been a fun year of PlayStation 30th Anniversary announcements and releases, but PlayStation continues to say that we should “stay tuned for more 30th anniversary celebrations” and people seem to think that there will be a major stream on the actual 30th anniversary next week.

In a recent PS5 trailer, there was a train departure board that had the date/time on it that equated to “03/12/2024” which is the original release date for the PlayStation 1 and the actual 30th anniversary, prompting people to believe that there could be an event happening.

Couple this with the fact that serial PlayStation leaker (who is always right) keeps saying that a bunch of new accessories including a black DualSense Edge, Pulse Explore/Elite headphones, a Helldivers 2 DualSense among other accessories are due to be announced imminently.

There’s also been a long-standing rumour that the original God of War trilogy is being remastered/remade, with Christopher Judge (voice of Kratos) hinting that announcements were coming soon – this would be the perfect announcement for a 30th anniversary stream.

If that wasn’t enough and you’re looking for a reason to get on the hype train and believe, it was announced that Bloodborne would be down for maintenance on this same day, and whilst this does seem like a stretch, if PlayStation is going to have an event to celebrate 30 years of games, it does seem like it’d be amiss to not do something with Bloodborne.

It does feel like it’s been a long, long time since we’ve heard from PlayStation in a major way, and there’d be no better time than now to celebrate all-things PlayStation with an event.

Dealabs is now reporting that in addition to a black DualSense Edge and Pulse Elite/Explore variations, a black PlayStation Portal will also release in the near future.

It will come in at the same price as the white version ($329.95 AUD) and will apparently be in short supply to begin with.

Dealabs has also reported that a Helldivers II DualSense controller as well as other hardware and accessories are in the works due to be announced and released very soon, so it’ll be interesting to see what that’s all about.

It’s rumoured that PlayStation will make some announcements to celebrate 30 years of PlayStation in the next week or so, so we might see all of this come to light.

Serial leaker Bilbilkun is reporting that PlayStation is set to release three high-end PlayStation accessories in a new black colourway.

This includes the DualSense Edge controller, PlayStation Pulse Elite headset and PlayStation Pulse Explore earbuds which will all apparently come in black.

These are all set to be released in the very near future and will cost the same as their current white counterparts, and we’ll keep you posted as soon as they’re announced.

There’s been rumors swirling for some time that PlayStation will either have an event on the 3rd of December, or make its next wave of announcements to celebrate the proper 30th anniversary of the PS1, with it teasing it in the latest PS5 trailer.

Regardless of whether an event happens or not, it seems as though it’s going to be an exciiting few weeks for PlayStation fans.

Bloomberg is reporting that PlayStation is in the early stages of developing a portable console that can play PS5 games on the move.

The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo for the portable market. This device is likely years away from launch which means that Sony could also avoid bringing it to market.

The Bloomberg report says that the idea builds on the PlayStation Portal, which was initially intended to function as a standalone device like the Steam Deck, which the report also delves into.

“Sony Group Corp. is in the early stages of developing a portable console that would play its PlayStation 5 games on the move. The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo Co. for the portable gaming market, according to people familiar with its development. It would also counter any potential mobile hardware from Xbox maker Microsoft Corp., which is working on prototypes in the category as well. Sony’s portable device is likely years away from launch and the company could still decide against bringing it to market, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private plans” says the report.

The last few months have been interesting for PlayStation fans and collectors alike with the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection selling out instantly, but most people don’t realise that even if somebody got everything in the collection, there’s actually almost no chance that anyone can have a complete collection due to the posters included with the consoles.

An interesting twist this time around was the fact that both the PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim came with a poster which was randomised with 30 different ones to collect. It feels like PlayStation did this to go the extra mile in making collector’s stress a little bit less if they missed out on something in particular knowing they could truly never get all of them.

The 30 different posters have started being collated in a Reddit thread and there’s some absolutely stunning ones ranging from the iconic PlayStation boot screen, loads of different shots from the PS1 and PS5 collection, heaps of 30th Anniversary product shots, a really cool look at different PS1 logo concepts, some x-ray shots at all the different PlayStation consoles and a really cool montage with all the white consoles from the different generations.

It’s been a feature that’s been requested ever since the PlayStation Portal was announced and PlayStation has confirmed that it’s coming today.

In a new update that is launching today, the PlayStation Portal will be able to stream over 120 PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog directly from PlayStation servers rather than remote play from your console.

This will be available to PlayStation Plus Premium members and available in the below countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

This is launching in beta and will only be available with PS5 games including the below to begin with:  Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

You’ll be able to stream games at 1080p/60FPS and take advantages of all of the same control options of the DualSense controller whilst cloud streaming.

The update will also bring the ability to make the speaker volume even lower than previously available as well as the ability to adjust settings for your PlayStation Link devices such as volume and sidetone volume.

Serial leaker Deallabs has posted some of PlayStation’s upcoming Black Friday deals early. So far, these are confirmed for the US and Europe, but we’d be shocked if they didn’t make their way down under as well. The deals are set to run from November 22nd until December 12th.

It’s said that the sale will bring significant discounts for the PS5 Slim (both versions) as well as PlayStation VR2 and the Horizon Call of the Mountain pack with the price set to be almost halved.

It’s also expected that a bunch of games will be on sale, both digitally and physically as well, but we’ll let you know once we have confirmation for Australia.

When the PS5 launched four years ago, it was missing a port that was used for the PS4 PlayStation Camera among other accessories, so Sony launched a free offer for those that owned the original PlayStation VR to get a dongle that would allow them to still connect it.

In the next few weeks, Sony has announced that it will end this offer, so those that would like an adaptor to use their original PlayStation Camera with the original PlayStation VR on PS5 have until November 26th (or until stock runs out) over at this link HERE. 

In order to be eligible, you need to have the serial number for your PlayStation VR (original) serial number which can be found on the processor unit.

“As of November 26th 2024, or until supplies last, the PlayStation Camera adaptor will no longer be available.” says an updated FAQ on the PlayStation Camera Adaptor support website.

Whilst we’d imagine the amount of people that need this adaptor to be small, it’s worth pointing out that there’s still many, many original PlayStation VR games that can only be played using the original headset on PS5 as PlayStation VR2 games aren’t backwards compatible. This includes Astro Bot Rescue Mission which is one of the best VR games to date and still stuck on the original PlayStation VR.

Whilst the PS5 Pro doesn’t have any kind of special intro or appear to be any different from an UI point of view outside of a few settings, I did notice almost instantly that in the new Welcome Hub there is a new PS5 Pro background that seems like it’ll be exclusive to the console.

The new background pulls in a heap of colours just like the first trailer for the PS5 Pro did, and it seems to feature what I’m assuming is the custom chip that is featured in the PS5 Pro, which is a really cool touch as it’s obviously going to be a big part of PlayStation’s DNA going forward with PlayStation PSSR.

Whilst what we can tell you about the PS5 Pro is still super limited, I can talk about the actual hardware now, and after a handful of days with the PS5 Pro on my entertainment unit, I’m a massive fan of the design with the hardware blending the best parts of both consoles.

Love it or hate it, the original PS5 and all of the accessories that have released for it have such a strong design style that PlayStation has really pulled over the PS5 Pro in a more futuristic and premium way. The console has the same height of the original PS5 console but pulls over the four plate design (as well as the thinness) of the PS5 Slim with an even more distinct middle section that resembles racing strips, of the triple tier that the PS4 Pro incorporated.

A major difference when it comes to the faceplates is that they’re all matte on the Pro whilst the Slim had a mix of two glossy and two matte, and this is much appreciated on the Pro.

I actually really prefer this design and I think it looks less awkward than the single strip between the PS5 Slim. Overall, whilst not as small as the Slim, it still feels a lot less of a behemoth, and comparing it to the original PS5, which I’ve been picking up a lot over the last week, it’s a lot lighter, and feels a lot less thicker, which is impressive given the output.

Just like on the PS5 Slim, on one side under two of the faceplates, there’s not a lot to look at, but on the other side, you have a PS5 disc drive slot which has a very simple single connector that allows the disc drive to slot in super easily, and on the top plate on that same side you have the empty SSD slot that accompanies the larger internal 2TB SSD.

As part as ports go it’s an identical array to what was on the Slim with two USB-C ports on the front (no more USB-A like the original PS5 on the front), two USB-A ports on the back, an ethernet port, HDMI and power, with the relevant cables as well as an original DualSense controller in the box.

Exactly with the PS5 Slim, there’s two horizontal plastic legs that plug into the console which I much prefer to the original PSs5 stand that would slip and slide with the console in horizontal mode. If you’re wanting to put your PS5 on the vertical position, there’s a $50 stand that you can buy, that isn’t necessary in order for the PS5 to stand up, but it does look fantastic if you’re someone who has your PS5 on display.

Outside of this, there isn’t a heap to talk about when it comes to the actual physical design of the PS5 Pro. It’s an extremely nice looking console and carries on the very clear design aesthetic that has been strong throughout this whole generation, so stay tuned to see how the inside of the console builds on the foundation that PlayStation has laid so far.

It’s PS5 Pro release week and whilst the console doesn’t come without a disc drive, Sony released a disc drive that works with both the PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim almost at year ago, but unfortunately, since the announcement of the PS5 Pro, it’s been mostly out of stock in Australia.

We do know that more stock is landing in Australian stores this week with the PS5 Pro, and whilst it’s going to be hard to get one based on the limited stock available, I’ve put together the below guide on where you’re most likely to have success and also will keep it updated over the coming months and weeks.

WHERE TO BUY A PS5 PRO DISC DRIVE IN AUSTRALIA

• JB Hi-Fi: JB Hi-Fi stores are getting stock in very small quantities and we have seen quite a few success stories of people getting them over the last 2-3 days.
• Amazon: If any online retailer is likely to have stock this week, It’s Amazon as it’s been a long time since they’ve had stock and we know that stock is coming into the country. You can find the listing for it HERE.
• EB Games: It’s very unlikely that EB Games stores will have stock this week as they took pre-orders alongside PS5 Pro pre-orders that are all hitting stores this week. For those that are desperate, you can buy a PS5 Slim Disc edition, remove the disc drive and trade that into EB Games as a PS5 Slim Digital losing only $5 off the trade fee for the missing faceplate toward your PS5 Pro (figures here)
• Big W: Unlikely as they had a small stock drop online but the listing is still live and you can find it HERE.

Several of these games will be patched with free software updates and can easily be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label attached to their game pages, similar to how it all worked with the PS4 Pro.

It’s also worth noting that thanks to an AI-assisted upscaling mode, called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, any game can be enhanced in some way without the need for a patch – though the best improvements will come from games that are officially PS5 Pro enhanced.

The PS5 Pro launches in exactly one week and our review unit has officially arrived. We can’t show you too much or talk about any of the specifics just yet, but we can tell you that it has arrived and show you the box.

You can expect impressions and our full review with a bunch of game impressions in the lead-up to launch, but for now, I’ve taken a bunch of photos of the box and compared it to the OG PS5 box and PS5 Slim Disc Edition as well. Just like the PS5 Slim, it’s a lot smaller than the OG PS5 box, only just a tad bigger than the Slim.

In case you don’t know a heap about the PS5 Pro, it’s out on November 7th for $1,199 AUD (without a disc drive) and has the below features:

• Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.

The PS5 Pro is just over a week away from launching and we’re starting to get a closer look at some key elements surrounding the console.

Through the retail copy of ‘Empire Of The Ants’ we get our first look at the PS5 Pro enhanced label, that follows on from the PS4 Pro enhanced label were featured on games following the PS4 Pro launch. This will be used specifically to tell gamers that a game has been actually altered to run better on PS5 Pro, through improved frame rates, ray-tracing or resolution.

Similarly, our first look at the box in the flesh has appeared online as well, from a Japanese source. We get to see it in comparison to the original PS5 and the PS5 Slim, with the box appearing a lot smaller than the OG PS5 and around the same size as the PS5 Slim (with a disc drive).

Sony has today announced that Concord won’t be returning with the last few months spent exploring options, ultimately the company has announced that the game will be sunset and not return.

Following this decision, Sony also announced that Firewalk Studios, the game behind Concord would be closed. In addition to this, mobile studio Neon Koi will also be closed.

Both of these announcements were made by Herman Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment on the official website, and you can read that full statement here. 

Hulst posted the below statement:

“I know none of this is easy news to hear, particularly with colleagues and friends departing SIE.  Both decisions were given serious thought, and ultimately, we feel they are the right ones to strengthen the organization.  Neon Koi and Firewalk were home to many talented individuals, and we will work to find placement for some of those impacted within our global community of studios where possible.

I am a big believer in the benefits of embracing creative experimentation and developing new IP. However, growing through sustainable financials, especially in a challenged economic environment is critical.

While today is a difficult day, there is much to look forward to in the months ahead from the Studio Business Group and our teams.  I remain confident that we are building a resilient and capable organization driven by creating unforgettable entertainment experiences for our players.?”

Firewalk Studios made one last statement on its official Twitter page, going through the journey from independent studio to being acquired by PlayStation and going full speed into full production with Concord in 2022. You can read that full message here.

It feels like we’ve been waiting for it forever, but as of today, the PS5 Welcome Hub has arrived on Australian consoles.

This adds a totally new tab for the PS5 home screen that has a quick way to access trophies, battery level, storage summary, news, PlayStation Plus additions, media, online friends, friend activity in one neat place.

It also brings the return of wallpapers to the console as well, with a number of PlayStation themed ones available as well as an animated Astro Bot one. Hopefully these get added to quite frequently as it’s one of the most-missed feature from PS3/PS4 days.

Whilst I knew this was coming, after a quick play with it, I’m very surprised at how robust it is, with you able to totally customise how big or small everything is, what information is shown and even customise what you see from each widget. It’s a big improvement to what was shown on the home screen before.

I had to restart my console to get it to show up, so if you wake from rest mode and don’t see it (and are on the latest version), I recommend giving it a reset.

Great news for collectors as it seems that Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 7 are all getting physical PS5 releases.

According to JB Hi-Fi, all three game will release on disc for $49 each on December 6th. This hasn’t been officially announced yet (outside of a ratings board listing a few months ago), but it’s great for those that want to own the game physically on PS5.

All three games have received PS5 updates, so we’re not expecting any enhancements. You can find the listings below:

Dbrand has lifted the lid off its much anticipated Darkplates 2.0 for PS5 Slim and there’s a lot more differences than we anticipated.

For this initial run, they’re just being launched in black, and instead of the four plates that Sony released, Dbrand has stuck with the two plate design, which does make the Slim look a lot more like the original PS5 (although Slimmer).

You can buy the plates in either a Disc or Digital format, and there’s also cut-outs for where the vents are which Dbrand says improves cooling.

Probably the most interesting part of Dbrand’s PS5 plates is the fact that you can buy a stand that looks a lot like the original PS5 stand that came with the console. This has magnets in it (that will only work with these plates), and this solves the major issue that I had with the original PS5 stand and should stop it slip sliding everywhere.

The PS5 Darkplates 2.0 for the PS5 Slim can be had for $59.95 USD (~$89 AUD) and an extra $10 USD for the stand (~$15 AUD) if you’re buying them together otherwise the stand is $14.95 USD (~$22 AUD) standalone . You can buy them HERE.

PlayStation has today announced PlayStation The Concert, a world tour that will take place across 2025/2026.

This will be a celebration of all things PlayStation with games such as The Last Of Us, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima and God of War all featured, among PlayStation’s 30 years of gaming. This will merge music and cutting edge visuals in what should be an amazing experience.

So far, only the European leg has been revealed with locations in more than 200 cities including the US, UK and beyond to be announced at a later day. We hope that Australia will be included in this.

Unfortunately, it seems as though Amazon seems to have taken too many orders for PlayStation 30th Anniversary items with several people sending in screenshots of their DualSense controller being cancelled and a $5 gift card given in return.

In an email sent to customers, Amazon says that “We’re unable to fulfil your order for the DualSense 30th Anniversary controller because they are no longer available from the supplier. As a result, we’ve had to cancel your order and your original payment payment won’t be charged for them.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment this may have caused. To make up for the inconvenience we’ve applied a $5 Amazon gift card to your account”.

Obviously, this is devastating, and probably confirmation that Sony isn’t planning on releasing any more units in the future.

Those that were lucky in JB Hi-FI’s second chance draw should have had their links sent out today.

It’s no secret at this point how hard it was to get a 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro not only in Australia but also in the US and Europe, with Australia locking the only available consoles behind the highest tier of EB Games’ membership program or a JB Hi-FI ballot.

PlayStation Japan had a great idea that probably still doesn’t help with the amount available, but at least left people knowing that only the most hardcore of PlayStation fans could get their hands on it.

To be eligible to purchase the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro in Japan, you had to have a PlayStation Network account registered between February 22nd and September 19th 2024 (the time that the collection was announced) and played at least 30 hours between these two dates on either PS5 or PS4.

These people will go into a reservation system that lasts two weeks, and if the number of entrants exceeds what’s available, it’ll go into a lottery (much like the JB system).

Now, it’s still not a huge amount of time for potential entrants, and but I love the concept of making it so people can’t just make an account and grab one, which was similar to how EB Games did it, and secondly, that you had to actually have been playing games on PlayStation.

It also seems like you have to be logged in with this account to even make it into the store, so people can’t just be clogging up the system by window shopping other items which we do doubt saw happen at EB Games.

Here’s the exact stipulations from the PlayStation Japan website:

“Those who use PlayStation Network with a Sony account registered in Japan. The total time that either the PS5 or PS4, or both, is turned on for a total of 30 hours or more while signed in with the Sony account used to apply between Saturday, February 22, 2014 and Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 23:59.”

In what seems like it’ll be the last chance to nab any of the PlayStation 30th Anniversary collection, JB Hi-Fi’s ballot is apparently being drawn this morning.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU WON JB HI-FI PLAYSTATION 30TH ANNIVERSARY BALLOT

Those that are succesful will be notified by email by Friday at 5pm AEST, and then will have to select a day (7th, 8th or 9th of October) in which they’ll receive an SMS between 8am and 8pm on their selected day to buy their items which must be done by 11:59pm on that same day.

It’s important that you check that your correct mobile number (and email) are listed on your JB Hi-FI Perks account as both will be used to purchase your product. This seems to have been done to prevent scalpers.

What still isn’t clear is what happens if someone selected more than one item, in the sense that it’s not clear if they’ll be offered multiple items and then select one, whether one will be chosen at random for them, or if a ballot will be done for each item starting with the PS5 Pro and working down to the DualSense controller.

Big W has revealed that it will be taking PS5 Pro pre-orders as well as a few PlayStation 30th Anniversary product pre-orders at 10:00am tomorrow.

It will be taking pre-orders for both the standard PS5 Pro console as well as the 30th Anniversary PS5 Digital Slim console asn the 30th Anniversary DualSense controller. You’ll be able to pre-order all of these products HERE at 10:00am AEST

• PS5 Pro (Standard) – $1,199 AUD
• PlayStation 30th Anniversary PS5 Slim Digital
• PlayStation 30th Anniversary DualSense Controller

This seems to be the offering that most retailers will have and we’d expect the likes of Amazon to have the same three items. 

So far, the only retailer who has confirmed they will be stocking all five PlayStation 30th Anniversary items including that super limited PS5 Pro is JB Hi-FI who will be holding a ballot. We’re still waiting to see if EB Games will also have stock.

In addition to the PS5 Chroma collection that was revealed earlier today, it’s also been revealed that a Limited Edition Fortnite is releasing later this year.

It’s a blue controller featuring a bunch of graffiti on it with the Fortnite logo on the touch pad as well as characters such as Fishstick and Peely drawn onto the controller.

The controller will launch on November 7th with pre-orders starting on October 3rd. It seems like this one will be coming to Australia.

EB Games has just popped up its listing for the PS5 Pro ahead of pre-orders going live tomorrow, and whilst they still won’t require the whole amount to be paid upfront, it will be higher than it has been for any other console.

To pre-order the PS5 Pro at EB Games, you’ll be out of pocket $300 day one when pre-orders go live at 10:00am AEST. These are limited to one per person and EB Games still says that a trade deal is incoming.

As far as we know, JB Hi-Fi has also confirmed they’ll be taking pre-orders for standard PS5 Pro (and a ballot for 30th anniversary goodies) with them likely requiring the full $1,200 up front and it’s expected that Amazon will also be stocking them and as always they will hopefully not require anything up front with no charge until shipment.

The post EB Games Will Require A Higher Deposit For PS5 Pro Pre-Orders appeared first on Press Start.

Sony has today announced two new gaming monitors in its InZone range.

The InZone M10S is a 1440p OLED monitor with a 480hz refresh rate. It has an absolutely gorgeous design with a slimline stand and super slim bezels. It has a peak brightness of 1,300 nits and HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 functionality as well.

It’s available in the US today for $1,099 USD (~$1,500 AUD), but an Australian release date hasn’t been confirmed.

Sony also announced that it is releasing an updated version of its 4K M9 monitor. It’s the M9 II and it has a faster 160hz refresh rate and Auto HDR mapping for PS5s. It also has an updated design with cleaner black lines rather than the white/black combo that it had before.

It’s also received a price drop to $799 USD (~$1,160 AUD), but also seemingly isn’t coming to Australia at least at launch.

It’s set to be a big week for PlayStation fans next week with both the standard PS5 Pro as well as five PlayStation 30th anniversary products going up for pre-order including a custom PS5 Pro bundle (12,300 units available globally), a PS5 Slim Digital, a PlayStation Portal and DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers all in the theme of the PS1.

If PS5 Pro pre-orders weren’t going to be chaotic enough (going off the PS5 Disc drive already selling out), then the five limited edition items live at the same is sure to be a bit of a headache, so here’s all the info you know.

WHEN IS THE PS5 PRO RELEASE DATE?

The PS5 Pro will launch on November 7th, 2024, less than two months away.

The PS5 Pro will cost $1,199 AUD in Australia and release on November 7th with pre-orders beginning on September 26th. This doesn’t include a disc drive, so we’ve done the price for both together as well (it can be purchased for $159 separately).

Not content with the 30th anniversary collection, Sony has announced another new line of PS5 accessories.

It’s called the Chroma Collection and the DualSense controllers and console covers shine, shimmer and shift colours from every angle.

There’s Chroma Pearl which is pink/cream, Chroma Indigo which is blue/purple and Chroma Teal which is green.

It seems as though these will be available only for the PS5 Slim as detailed by the PlayStation Blog, but we’ll keep you posted on this.

Pre-orders will begin on October 3rd with Chroma Pearl and Indigo releasing on November 7th with Teal launching on January 23rd.

Serial leaker Bilbilkun from Dealabs has published US pricing for two of the PlayStation 30th Anniversary items including the DualSense controller and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition.

The PlayStation 30th Anniversary DualSense controller is set to cost the same as previous Limited Edition DualSense controllers such as the recent Astro Bot controller, so you can expect to pay $125 AUD.

As far as the PS5 Slim Digital Edition goes, it’s said to be a $50 USD (roughly $100 AUD) increase over the standard PS5 Slim Digital so you can expect to pay about $780-$800 AUD, which seems reasonable given you’re getting a vertical stand, a faceplate for a disc drive as well as a number of special collector’s items.

As far as the price goes for the PS5 Pro bundle goes, which is the one that people seem to be most keen for, this hasn’t been revealed yet, but we can estimate that it’ll cost about $1,700 going off that same $100 increase after adding in the DualSense Edge controller and DualSense charging dock, but this isn’t confirmed. It’s also possible PlayStation could charge a further premium given how limited it is.

Another element that is unclear is whether the DualSense controller includes the incredible PS1 inspired USB-C cord. It appears that neither the DualSense Edge or DualSense will come with it, unless you purchase one of the console bundles.

We got concrete evidence that a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster is on the way last week, and instantly rumours started circulating from the usual suspects that a Days Gone remaster was on the way.

The rumours started with VGC Journo Jordan Middler responding to a Tweet that an “even less exciting” remaster was on the way, by saying that “If he was angry that his character is in Astro Bot, he’s going to lose his mind at this,” which is in reference the Director of Day’s Gone being fairly miffed that the game’s lead character Deacon ST John was part of Astro Bot.

This is a weird one as it was a game that was praised among fans, but it’s been well documented by the game’s Director that Sony didn’t want to proceed with the franchise, so this might be them giving it another shot, or trying to recoup costs by releasing it on the PS5.

With a rumoured State of Play said to be taking place in the next week or so, it’ll be interesting to see if both the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster (which seems to be a lock at this point) and the Days Gone remaster both show up.

We gave Days Gone a 7/10 in our original review saying: “Days Gone is a fine addition to the evergrowing list of first-party Sony exclusives. Does it have the shine and polish comparable to Naughty Dog’s best works? No, but it delivers a dense and beautiful open world that proves that there’s perhaps a little bit of elbow room left for zombies in gaming, even if we’re not calling them that this time around.”

PlayStation announced that it’d be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a retro PS1 inspired version of almost its entire currently product line-up including the upcoming PS5 Pro.

At the end of the video introducing all the products, the company teased the boxes which would contain a nice surprise, and quickly after the video wrapped up, the boxes appeared online confirming that they do take each console to the next level.

For each of the PS5 Digital console, PlayStation Portal and DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, PlayStation has created a special black/grey box that is almost an identical replica of the original PlayStation box.

For the PS5 Pro bundle which is super limited with its 12,300 units, it’s a special whited out box that we’d assume either contains some of the other boxes inside, or at least the products laid out in a way that pays tribute to the OG console.

If I’m honest, as nice as the bundle is, the box does look a little strange next to the others and doesn’t scream PlayStation 1 but I’m happy to be proven wrong.

PlayStation has confirmed that another 10 games are set to leave PlayStation Plus Extra/Deluxe in the coming weeks.

This includes another big PlayStation first-party game in Little Big Planet 3 leaving the service following Horizon Zero Dawn leaving this month month. Otherwise on the list Gotham Knights is also leaving the service (as it is Xbox Game Pass too).

Unfortunately we don’t have an exact date for these leaving because PlayStation doesn’t explicitly say it outside of the ‘last chance to play’ tab on PlayStation.

The experts over at Digital Foundry, who are far more equipped to comment on the PS5 Pro versus PC debate than anyone else have gone on IGN’s podcast to talk about the PS5 Pro and its comparison to PC.

There’s no doubt that PlayStation didn’t do a very good job of explaining the PS5 Pro technical capabilities and why this is such a big moment in the console space, but Richard Leadbetter, founder of Digital Foundry has explained why direct comparisons are difficult to what exists currently.

Mark Cerny alluded to this in his presentation, but it does genuinely seem as though the AMD technology in the PS5 Pro has been created in conjunction with Sony and doesn’t exist in the PC space when it comes to AMD GPUs at the present time.

As detailed by Leadbetter, “The GPU that you’re gonna need, if you consider a holistic view of all of the different components – the enhanced ray tracing, no AMD GPU has that at the moment, the machine learning block, no AMD GPU has that – it’s almost like an Nvidia-style feature set, but made by AMD.”

He goes on to say that it’s a NVIDIA set of AI features in an AMD GPU (which again doesn’t exist yet in the PC space) and the closest GPU would be an RTX 4070. The cheapest 4070 available on popular Aussie PC retailer is $829 with most in the $900-1000 range.

“The closest equivalent GPU [to the Pro] you’ll be looking at will be the [Nvidia GeForce] RTX 4070, the 4060 is quite close to base PlayStation 5 factoring out machine learning and ray tracing.. Beyond that, you’ve got to get a CPU, a motherboard, memory, power supply, case, 2 terrabyte SSD, so the costs are going to ramp up.” continued Leadbeter

Obviously, it’s no secret that $1,200 is a lot of money for a console, but as far as actual performance goes versus that price point, we’ll probably need to wait a little bit closer to launch and see how the performance stacks up, and how much of an improvement it is, but as far as the technology goes, it does seem to be quite impressive and a genuine step forward for AMD.

PlayStation has announced a new system update which includes a new Welcome hub, the ability to share party chat links to social media, personalised 3D audio, adaptive charging for controllers (for PS5 Slim/Pro) and new remote play options.

The biggest addition is a new personalised Welcome hub which is a dedicated space on your PS5 replacing the explore tab with a variety of widgets including console storage, battery levels, online friends, trophies, and many more.

You can also change the background of the Welcome Hub from a range of designs, and screenshots from your media gallery.

It’s rolling out today in the US and in the coming weeks globally.

Another new feature is Party Share which allows you to share party voice chat links on messaging or social media apps so that they can join your party chat without being on your friends list. This will also roll out over the next few weeks and launch into the PlayStation app as well.

After being tested in the beta phase, there’s also a new personalised 3D audio feature that will allow you to personalise the 3D audio, there’s new remote play options os that you can control who can us remote play on your PS5, and there’s adaptive charging for DualSense controller with PS5 Slim/Pro that allows you to change how long you supply power based on the battery life of your controller.

The PS5 Disc Drive was already available due to the fact that it can be added to the PS5 Slim console, but at the time of writing, it’s already sold out at Amazon, JB Hi-Fi and Big W (literally as I was writing this story), and only available on Harvey Norman at the time of writing.

You can keep an eye on the listing on Amazon HERE. It will set you back $159 when it’s back in stock.

Interestingly enough, EB Games do not stock the disc drive currently, but we expect that to change and hopefully stock to ramp up in the lead-up to the November 7th PS5 Pro release date.

If you do have a PS5 Slim with a disc drive, you should be able to take the disc drive from that console and bring it across to your PS5 Pro.

Overseas it’s the same story with the disc drive being in the top seller’s list on Amazon, and the new PS5 vertical stand (which was compatible with the PS5 Slim as well), is in the top selling list on Amazon Australia as well.

It definitely seems as though despite the PS5 Pro price response being negative, that there’s at least a handful of gamers that are buying the disc drive ahead of the November 7th release date.

The PS5 Pro was announced this morning, and whilst everyone was expecting a higher cost and the a disc drive likely missing in the box, the announcement and subsequent reaction was a lot more extreme than expected.

In case you missed the news, the PS5 Pro will offer improved graphical fidelity, ray-tracing and frame rates with a 2TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7, it will cost $1,199.95 AUD ($699 USD) with the disc drive being available separately for $160.

We asked our readers whether they were going to buy one on day one with the three pre-determined responses being yes, no or that more information is needed (performance/trade offers etc). With over 1,700 responses: 10% said yes, 77.4% said no and 12.4% said they needed more information.

Interestingly enough, I asked the same question a week ago when it was very clear a PS5 Pro reveal was imminent, and the responses were very different with 31% saying yes, 51% saying no and 18% saying it depended on the price, with majority of the latter clearly moving more into the no space.

Overwhelming, the feedback this morning is in three key areas:

• The price coming in at $1,199.95 (or $1,360 with a disc drive) marking the first time a console has ever been more than $1,000 in Australia
• The console not having a disc drive in the box with Australia still being very much a physical market and there being fears about the clear move to a digital future
• PS5 Pro performance improvements not yet being clear from game to game with the last mid-gen refresh (PS4 Pro) justifying its existence with clear selling points such as 4K/HDR compatibility

Obviously the first point is unlikely to change outside of price drops + potential trade deals, the second point people will relax on as you can buy a disc drive separately and third one will hopefully become clearer over time as admittedly it’s hard to do in a presentation (and a super short and highly technical one at that).

It’ll be interesting to see how the next 8 weeks or so play out, in terms of what we new games we see revealed and how the public perception continues to change over time. This was never going to be a console that the overwhelming majority picked up day one, but the reaction has been fairly negative this morning.

The PS5 Pro was announced this morning in a technical presentation hosted by Mark Cerny. The presentation was short and sweet, clocking in at under ten minutes, and covered details such as how the improved hardware will lead to tangible improvements in past and present games.

The launch details were also confirmed, so here’s what we know so far, including when you can get your money down on one.

WHEN IS THE PS5 PRO RELEASE DATE?

Sony announced this morning that the PS5 Pro will launch on November 7th, 2024, less than two months away.

HOW MUCH WILL THE PS5 PRO COST?

The PS5 Pro will cost $1,199 AUD in Australia and release on November 7th with pre-orders beginning on September 26th. This doesn’t include a disc drive, so we’ve done the price for both together as well (it can be purchased for $159 separately).

WHEN IS THE PS5 PRO AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER?

Sony has announced that the pre-orders for the PS5 Pro will be available on September 26th at 10:00am AEST at participating retailers. An exact time hasn’t been revealed, but generally PlayStation pre-order events happen in the morning (normally 10am).

So far, EB Games is the only retailer to confirm that it will be taking pre-orders, but we’d be surprised if you couldn’t grab one from the likes of JB Hi-Fi, Amazon, Target, Big W, Kogan, Harvey Norman and everyone else you could get a PS5 from.

So a little over two weeks until you can pre-order. While you wait, it might be worth checking out the confirmed PS5 Pro enhanced games or the console itself. Don’t forget that the console itself doesn’t come with a disc drive, and has to be purchased separately.

For the first time, Sony has decided to only launch the PS5 Pro without a disc drive, with the ability to add the existing disc drive under the faceplate exactly like you can with the PS5 Slim. It’s something that’s already dividing gamers online, but you’d have to think that some money has been saved in having one SKU.

As far as size of the console goes, it’s the same height as the original PS5 and the same thickness as the PS5 Slim. It’s presumed that it will use the same faceplates as the PS5 Slim which is why there’s a larger gap between the two faceplates.

PS5 PRO DETAILS

The PS5 Pro will have a 2TB SSD as well as Wi-Fi 7, but the big improvements come in the way of graphical fidelity and performance.

In a 9 minute presentation, Mark Cerny, PS5 Lead Architect revealed the first official details about the PS5 Pro. He spent a good amount of time going through many of the features of the original PS5, going into pain points for developers including needing to build graphics mode for fidelity or performance.

Cerny said that the main reason that the PS5 Pro aims to rectify this by merging the two modes to provide better frame rates in fidelity mode, or more fidelity in performance mode.

The big three improvements are a larger GPU with rendering of up to 45% faster, advanced ray-tracing at double of triple the speeds, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is PlayStation’s AI-Driven upscaling method.

PS5 Pro Game Boost can be applied to more than 8,500 backwards compatible PS5 games played on the PS4 Pro to improve or stabilise performance of both PS4 and PS5 games.

It’s been all but confirmed for weeks with known leakers confirming its existence and design and PlayStation then featuring that described design in a 30th anniversary graphic, but incase you were still doubting it (and I’ve definitely seen some non-believers), PlayStation accidentally confirmed this morning that tonight’s event is indeed for the PS5 Pro.

An unlisted video that was embedded in the Blog post was originally titled ‘PS5 Pro’ before being changed to “PlayStation 5 technical presentation”, which is the last bit of proof that we needed to known with 100% certainty that the PS5 Pro is going to be revealed tonight.

We know that lead PS5 architect Mark Cerny will be hosting a 9 minute presentation to talk about the technology (which is said to be based around AI upscaling), and it seems likely we’ll get a look at the console given PlayStation featured it in a graphic, but outside of that, we don’t know whether we’ll be getting a price/release date as well as pre-order details at this stage.

If we do, let’s hope that here’s a bit more warning than what happened with PS5 pre-orders going live in the early AM and then being sold out for several years after the fact. We’ll obviously let you know as soon as we have any information tomorrow morning.

The price of the DualSense controller has always fluctuated based on what type it is, with the original white/black models costing $109.95 since the PS5 came out and the most recently released Astro Bot controller (as well as a bunch of other limited edition colours) costing $124.95.

As of today, the cheapest DualSense controller got a little more expensive with a bunch of other special edition colours also going up in price.

The white and black DualSense controllers will now cost $119.95 in Australia ($10 increase), whilst the Cobalt Blue, Volcanic Red and Sterling Silver DualSense controllers will now cost $124.95 ($5 increase).

PlayStation announced its 30th anniversary event this morning, and along with it, a graphic that shows off a bunch of iconic PlayStation hardware, but it was a piece of hardware shown front and centre that caught our eye.

Right between the PlayStation logo and the 30th symbol, you can see a PS5 console that perfectly matches the PS5 Pro description that was leaked last week with three extra strips up the middle. We can see that this is not a PS5 Slim as that is also featured in the graphic elsewhere.

Bilbilkun took to Twitter to confirm that this was indeed the same console design that he had seen and sketched last week.

PlayStation has announced a 30th anniversary celebration event that will take place throughout the next few months. This is just a few of the ways that PlayStation plans to celebrate with the post assuring us that we should be on the “lookout for more announcements in the near future”.

My First GT will be a brand new free version of Gran Turismo designed to help people get into Gran Turismo. It will be available on PS5 and PS4.

A bunch of great digital soundtracks are coming to streaming services including God Of War, God Of War II, God Of War: Ghost of Sparta, Twisted Metal, Starhawk and Unit 13. These will drop from October through January.

A new product line called ‘Shapes of Play’ will drop including a board game, a magnetic set of blocks and a line of stress balls. It’s unclear if these will be coming to Australia but they include the below:

• Shapes of Play: Battle is a board game where you can challenge a friend to line up four different shapes of the same color on the board to win.
• Shapes of Play: Create is a set of magnetic blocks that you can position in any direction to create fun shapes.
• Shapes of Play: Recharge lets you experience a new way to recharge between games, especially after that tough boss battle.

Astro Bot is out later this week with some copies arriving early in other parts of the world and whilst I feel that it’s rare for physical games to include anything in the box these days, PlayStation has celebrated the game’s gorgeous art and fan-service with some physical goodies in the box.

Under the disc, there’s some gorgeous art representing many of PlayStation’s key franchises including Ape Escape, Horizon, God of War, Ratchet and Clank and more, but surprisingly, there’s also a little pull out hand-drawn comic mimicking a manual  that appears to tell the opening story of Astro Bot and the events that lead to the game.

Deallabs, Billbil-kun looks to have just leaked the first PS5 Pro details ahead of the rumoured September announcement.

The known leaker claims to have seen the packaging for the PS5 Pro, which will carry on the PS5 Slim design, without the iconic PS5 wings. It will be apparently be a little bit thicker than the PS5 Slim and it will also have three stripes (rather than one on the PS5 Slim), similar to the design of the PS4 Pro.

Update: Adding more confusion to these ongoing rumours, Windows Central’s Jez Corden has now claimed this mystery Xbox Studios-to-PlayStation port is not Forza Horizon 5, though he also admits he’s unsure what the game could be:

Again, all of this is heavily steeped in speculation and unconfirmed rumour, so we’ll need to wait see what happens next week.

A number of notable leakers look to be teasing the next major Xbox exclusive to get a PlayStation port, and it could happen as soon as next week during Gamescom 2024.

Over on Resetera, at least two users known for being fairly good with early information – shinobi602 and NateDrake – have speculated we’ll be hearing news of another new PlayStation port of an Xbox title next week or in the very near future.

Most interestingly though, eXtas1s, who has previously accurately reported Xbox news including the drops of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy on Game Pass, has seemingly suggested that this game won’t be something like Starfield or Halo Infinite but will in fact be Forza Horizon 5. They didn’t explicitly name the title, but the below is a pretty big hint:

If accurate, and obviously we won’t know until Xbox has something official to say, Forza Horizon 5 launching on PlayStation consoles could have a pretty significant impact – especially if Sea of Thieves’ port becoming one of the best-selling PS5/PS4 games after it launched in April is any indication. Given the lack of cut-through for Xbox in some markets where a game like FH5 would really take off, it makes a lot of sense.

The previous round of Xbox Studios titles that came to PlayStation include Hi-Fi RUSH, Sea of Thieves, Grounded and Pentiment, and if they were representative of the company dipping its toes in the multiplatform waters, it’s pretty safe to say there’ll be much more to come.

Forza Horizon 5 originally launched on Xbox and PC back in 2021, and we scored it a huge 9.5/10 with Brodie saying, “Though it’s iterative in a lot of ways, Forza Horizon 5 is a near-faultless open-world racing experience that’s so sure of itself and its offerings that it goes the extra mile to sprinkle in the kinds of fan service that people go wild for. As a game it’s tremendous, but it’s also a brilliant, interactive postcard for a culture that is passionate about few things more than their country and their cars.”

PlayStation has revealed the release date for the upcoming PS5 and PC version of 2015’s hit horror title, Until Dawn, announcing that the newly-enhanced version of the game arrives on October 4th.

Along with the date reveal, a new trailer has also released that explores the differences in this “rebuilt” experience, showing off direct comparisons between the old and new game that are genuinely quite impressive.

Running in Unreal Engine 5, the new Until Dawn benefits from entirely overhauled visuals and even includes “revised” cinematography with new motion control, a “reworked” prologue, more immersive audio design and a completely new camera mechanic. There are also new collectibles to find, and more accessibility and usability settings for players to use.

Sony’s seemingly going all-in on the Until Dawn IP, with production having recently begun on the film adaptation.

The film will feature Peter Stormare reprising his role as Dr. Hill in the game, joined by a new main cast that includes Maia Mitchell, Belmont Cameli Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo and Odessa A’zion.

As previously shared by Hollywood Reporter, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is helming this adaptation, while the script comes from Blair Butler (The Invitation) and Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle) so there’s some decent horror talent on board here, and the film is being described early as “an R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast.”

Shannon originally gave Until Dawn an 8/10 in his review way back in 2015, saying, “Until Dawn is a thrilling experience. For horror fans, this will be one of the best horror experiences that gaming has seen in years. It’s a perfect balance of story telling and gameplay and doesn’t drag on at all. I constantly found myself wanting to go back to find out what happened next which is rare in gaming narrative. Those looking for constant action may be disappointed, but I’d advise anybody who wants a unique and new experience to give it a go.”

In its latest financial report, Sony has shared sales data for PlayStation hardware and software, confirming that it sold 2.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the quarter ending June 2024, which is a drop from previous quarters but puts the total lifetime sales of the PS5 at a whopping 61.8 million units to date – very slightly outpacing sales of the PS4 at the same stage in its lifecycle.

Sony’s report also reveals that total sales of PS5 and PS4 software are down versus the same period last year, as well as first-party software, with the ratio of digital to physical game sales the highest yet at 80%. Despite the dip in hardware and software sales, Sony reports a 12% year-on-year increase in the sales in the Games & Network Services category and a 32% increase in operating income, which it attributes mostly to the effects of exchange rates and increased sales of network service like PlayStation Plus.

Monthy active users were up a fair amount compared to the same period the previous year, from 108 million to 116 million, though it’s still a drop from the previous two (typically busier) quarters.

Six months ago, when the company had posted a sales result of 54 million PS5s globally, Sony suggested the console was entering the second half of its life cycle, indicating it still had around four years left before being superseded by a new generation. With leaks still spilling out around the upcoming “PlayStation 5 Pro,” it seems like the platform could easily keep pace with its predecessor, if not outsell it by the end.

The most up-to-date software sales information confirms that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hit a sales milestone of 10 million copies in February this year, while Helldivers 2 has already managed to move 12 million units (combined across PS5 and PC) in less than three months, between launching in February and results being measured in May.

PlayStation seems to be betting big on Concord, its upcoming 5v5 multiplayer shooter and debut effort from Firewalk Studios, having just come off of a series of beta weekends and now going full throttle on marketing.

Just yesterday, we got answers to some of the bigger questions around the game including how player progression will work, what sort of free content and updates to expect post-launch and more. But what if your biggest question was, “How can I show my fandom for this unreleased multiplayer shooter by spending more money?”

If that’s you, I’ve got good news and disappointing news – the good news is that PlayStation is launching a Concord Limited Edition DualSense wireless controller and it looks real nice. The bad news is that it seems it’s only available in regions where the PlayStation Direct online store exists, so Aussie fans miss out.

“Join the crew of the Northstar!” reads the official product description for the controller, which is adorned with the same kind of retro-futurist aesthetic that makes Concord itself look so distinct.

“Lead your crew of Freegunner space outlaws in thrilling PvP battles with the DualSense Wireless Controller – Concord Limited Edition. Featuring elements of the Galactic Guide and Faster-Than-Light interstellar travel, the design showcases the colourfully vibrant nature of this new and spectacular sci-fi galaxy.”

Ewan had a fair amount of praise for Concord following the game’s beta, writing, “The game feels much more approachable for those that have dabbled in hero shooters but grew intimidated by the complexity of the meta. The core mechanics of hero shooters are still present, but cycling through characters makes for a changed pace I think most would enjoy. It’s well-rounded, nicely polished, with a generous assortment of unique but balanced characters.”

Hot off of a smaller update launching today, PlayStation has announced a new beta PS5 version beginning to roll out tomorrow that brings some handy new features to the console, including one that’s exclusive to the new “slim” models.

The biggest of the new features is the ability to create and save personalised 3D audio profiles for headsets like the Pulse Elite or Pulse Explore buds by letting the software run through a series of test, ensuring you get a sound profile that suits you and gives the best possible Tempest3D audio experience.

Starting with the beta it will also now be possible to select which users on a console can connect via Remote Play, adding a bit of extra control over who in your household can access the PS5 remotely.

And finally, Adaptive Charging is being added that will automatically adjust how long power is supplied to controllers charging via the console’s USB ports, and how long power will be supplied to the USB when nothing is connected. This is the one feature in this update that is only applicable to the PS5 Slim.

PlayStation says access to the beta will be available to selected users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany and France, so it seems Aussie players will miss out until the new features roll out in full.

Personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones and earbuds (available for all PS5 models)

In this generation, 3D audio is one of the key ways that creators have enhanced the immersive quality of games. As individuals, we all hear sounds differently based on the size and shape of our head, ears, and ear canals.

We’re pleased to introduce a feature that lets your PS5 console create a personalized 3D audio profile just for you. With a set of headphones or earbuds like the Pulse Elite wireless headset or Pulse Explore wireless earbuds,  you can run through a set of sound quality tests to analyze a vast number of factors to create an audio profile that best fits your hearing characteristics. For example, your personalized 3D audio profile may enable you to better sense the positions of characters and objects in a game world more clearly than before, making the experience more immersive.

To create a personalized 3D audio profile for your headphones or earbuds, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [3D Audio (Headphones)] on your PS5 console, and follow the steps displayed on the screen. Your audio profile will be saved on your PS5 per user, and you can also still select from 3D audio presets like before.

This feature builds on the 3D audio enhancements we’ve introduced to PS5 since launch, including 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers and support for compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices. These features give you additional options to immerse yourself more deeply in the rich variety of soundscapes in PS5 games, powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech.

Enable Remote Play for individual users (available for all PS5 models)

You can now adjust Remote Play settings per user and choose who is allowed to connect to your PS5 console using Remote Play. So, if your friends or family members come over and sign in to your PS5 console with their account for PlayStation Network, you can easily modify who can continue to access your PS5 console using Remote Play when they leave.

To adjust these settings, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Remote Play] > [Enable Remote Play], and choose which user you want to enable access to your PS5 console through Remote Play.

Adaptive charging for your controller (available for the latest PS5 model)

Adaptive charging for the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge wireless controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and Access controller is now available for PS5 beta participants using the latest PS5 model, when the console is in rest mode. Adaptive charging helps save power by adjusting the length of time that power is supplied to your controller based on its battery level.

To use adaptive charging, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Power Saving] > [Features Available in Rest Mode], and then select [Supply Power to USB Ports] > [Adaptive]. After your PS5 enters rest mode, if a controller isn’t connected, the power supply to the USB port will stop after a certain period of time.

Previously, Paramount+ content could be accessed on the PS5 via the Prime Video app with an additional subscription, but having a way to directly access the Paramount+ service on the current PlayStation hardware is certainly good news.

PlayStation has dropped a new system update for PS5, bringing it up to version 24.05-09.60.00 and adding in just a couple of new features.

The headline feature in the update is the ability to invite players to open game sessions using a QR code/link, meaning the invite can be shared through social media, messaging apps and so on via a mobile device. It’s a feature that PlayStation had previously promised, and should make finding or sharing online games with people you don’t regularly play with or have as friends on PSN a lot easier.

The second notable addition is the ability to use a voice command to open up Game Help action cards, though all voice command functionality on PS5 is still limited to English-speaking players in the US and UK.

The update naturally also comes with some of the usual “performance and stability” improvements, updates to some DualSense wireless controllers for additional stability and some minor UI/messaging changes.

As revealed by Gematsu, last year’s excellent indie “neo-noir third-person horror shooter/love story” El Paso, Elsewhere, is finally making its way to PlayStation very soon with a PS5 release scheduled for September 6th.

As with PC and Xbox the game will be released digitally, but this announcement also includes the news of a physical release of El Paso, Elsewhere coming alongside the PS5 version. Pre-orders are already available at JB Hi-Fi for $59, and the physical release comes with an exclusive poster and a digital download of the game’s banger soundtrack.

It was only a few months ago that a feature film adaptation of El Paso, Elsewhere was announced, so the game’s certainly been getting the support and recognition it’s deserved since it debuted last Setpember. According to Deadline, the film will “centre on James Savage, who while recovering from a toxic relationship, confronts both his inner demons and enigmatic ex-girlfriend, Janet, before she executes a world-ending ritual. James navigates her reality-bending universe of ethereal monsters while facing the truth of his own addictions and skewed sense of self-worth, learning that the only route to love is through healing.”

We gave El Paso, Elsewhere a huge 9/10 in our review last year, with James saying, “El Paso, Elsewhere takes a solid shooter foundation and elevates it with a compelling and raw look at humanity as told through a story of monsters and mythology. Outstanding performances, sharp writing, and some kick-arse combat collide to make a unique and memorable experience.”

It looks like an announcement around a PlayStation version of this year’s early viral hit, Palworld, may be on the horizon after a community manager from developer Pocketpair posted a cryptic message on X.

The CM’s post features the game’s title surrounded by hearts in what could be considered Xbox colours (the black/white of the current consoles and, of course, green) before they write, “I want to add more hearts, but not sure what colour would fit…hmm…how about….” and add in a pair of blue hearts.

A very loose tease, to be sure, but one that could hardly be taken other way at face value.

We already knew that Pocketpair was in talks to bring Palworld to more platforms, though at the time it was unclear whether that meant more consoles or simply additional PC storefronts/competing OS’ like Mac.

If a PlayStation announcement for Palworld is impending, it would be a shot in the arm for a title that’s still very popular but has definitely fallen out of the wider news and social media cycle since the virality of its launch on Xbox and PC. It could also indicate that the game is reaching a full release version soon-ish, given PlayStation doesn’t typically host early access games – though the recent launch of Slime Rancher 2 makes it seem as though that’s changed.

Though it’s had numerous updates and content additions since launch, we praised the launch version of Palworld as a derivative but strangely-compelling stew of genres and inspirations, with Edward saying, “If you can wrangle a few mates together for some ‘mon-like’ fun, or if you’re just a grizzled old survivalist like I am, I’d absolutely recommend picking up the game on Steam or jumping in via Game Pass to see for yourself if the hype is real. Go on, use HM03 and ride the Palworld wave that’s sweeping the globe.”

Update: Following the announcement that Mojang is working on a native PS5 version of Minecraft to be released later this year, the developer has already opened the doors for players to test out this new version ahead of time.

Anyone who owns the PS4 version of Minecraft and plays it on a PS5 console will be able to opt into the Preview version of the game and access the new features like 4K/60FPS visuals, with the main things to consider while it’s in Preview being no access to the in-game store, no cross-play with other platforms and the potential for unanticipated bugs or issues.

Mojang’s post reads:

If you own the PS4 version of Minecraft for your PS5, you’ll be able to access and test this early version by navigating to “Settings” and then “Preview” within the game*. This preview includes the new Tricky Trials Update, so you can venture into the trial chambers, meet a breeze, craft a mace, and more – all while trying out a version of Minecraft that’s designed for your console! As this is a preview version, we’ll need your help in hunting bugs (and we’re not talking about the silverfish spawning from trial spawners), as well as gathering any feedback.

Original: Mojang has officially announced that it’s currently testing Minecraft on PlayStation 5, where it’s gathering feedback and making improvements to a allow for a native PS5 version to launch later this year. Presumably, this new version would feature the same updates to the Xbox Series X|S version that happened late last year and enable 4K/60FPS for those with Microsoft’s latest console hardware.

The news comes as users (like doryNtr on X) have already discovered links to the PS5 version testing with “PlayStation 5 Preview” reportedly showing up as an option in the newest update.

“Mojang has begun testing Minecraft on PlayStation 5, paving the way for a native PS5 version to be released later this year.” the studio said in a statement. “This PS5 version of the game is currently in experimental mode so the team can continue to make improvements and listen to community feedback over the next few months.”

The studio also acknowledged the “current-gen” updates on Xbox, which seems to suggest the PS5 version will be similar. It also mentions “future game enhancements,” which could mean we’d eventually see features like ray-tracing implemented on current or future console hardware.

“Minecraft is also optimized for Xbox Series X|S consoles, where the game runs at up to 4K and 60FPS as of last December,” it said. “These updates to optimization are a continuation of Minecraft’s efforts to ensure a great experience on consoles while paving the way for future game enhancements.

The news comes alongside a big new update to the game, titled Tricky Trials, which brings new structures, decorative blocks, hostile mobs, weapons, items, crafting possibilities, paintings, pottery sherds, armor trims, and banners, trials, treasures and a heap more.

Now is definitely a good time to get the Minecraft train running full steam again though, with the Minecraft movie also on the horizon. The film, which is due to premiere in cinemas on April 5th, 2025, has been steadily amassing an all-star cast that includes the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and now it’s picked up a very recent Emmy winner and absolutely superstar for the ride.

The film’s official synopsis simply reads, “The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”

I’ve been a sucker for a platformer for as long as I’ve been gaming, first cutting my teeth on 2D SEGA titles like Sonic the Hedgehog and Alex Kidd before eventually finding some of my all-time favourite games in PlayStation’s early 3D stable – your Crash Bandicoots and Spyros, Ratchet and Jak, Sly Cooper and the like. While a lot of these games very much do their own thing within the genre and have unique qualities to offer, Team ASOBI’s upcoming Astro Bot feels like the first time a PlayStation platformer has met a certain Italian plumber on his own turf and genuinely managed to crack the formula. The key ingredient? Pure, unfiltered joy.

That was my biggest takeaway after being fortunate enough to spend some hands-on time with Astro Bot at the PlayStation Australia offices this week. This is a game that’s inherently, intrinsically joyful in a way that so few games manage to capture. This is Team ASOBI firing on all cylinders, but the cylinders are filled with glitter and confetti and they’re being operated by puppies wearing helicopter hats. That’s the level of joy we’re working with, here. I told myself I wouldn’t make the comparison but it’s honestly unavoidable – just a short time with the game has already given me the same feelings as Super Mario Odyssey did back in 2017.

Right from the moment I picked up the controller, presented with a map of one of the game’s six galaxies and the ability to fly around it in Astro’s DualSense rocket, it was clear that ASOBI doesn’t want to waste a single second in-game where something fun isn’t happening. As I fly to the first available level icon and select it, Astro’s ship descends down and in just a few short seconds I’m flying right into the level itself, still fully in control thanks to the real-world DualSense’s gyros. Once I’ve landed, things start to feel nice and familiar to Astro’s previous outings, making it an easy thing to pick up and play following 2020’s free Astro’s Playroom experience.

This first stage in the preview build, dubbed Sky Garden, is marked as one of the easier of the 80 that’ll ship in the full game, helping me dip my toes in both figuratively and literally – quite soon into the level I discover that Astro is now able to fully immerse and swim underwater. It’s in this level that I also get access to one of the game’s new gadgets, which seem to be typically tied to the DualSense’s triggers and used as one-off gimmicks to add flavour to the platforming. In this case, I got hold of an inflatable suit that would shoot Astro into the air and then allow him to gently float down, classic balloon-deflating sounds and all.

This came in handy for traversing the level’s critical path but naturally also for finding secrets and collectibles. The next stage, Construction Derby, was much the same – this time equipping me with an adorable robot pup that acted as a jetpack for crossing large distances and smashing through tough obstacles. Both of these made great use of the DualSense’s haptics and adaptive triggers to provide a lot of immediate and detailed feedback that made using them a blast. 

Through these gadgets, as well as other moments built into the stages that played on the unique features of the DualSense, Astro Bot goes to great effort to constantly reward players for their curiosity and platforming skill, whether it’s with collectible items, visual gags, fun PlayStation references or bonus challenges. Often it’s in the name of rescuing the many bot friends trapped in each stage, which is Astro’s main mission through this whole thing. 

Most of these are your standard bots, but each level has at least a couple that are cosplaying as iconic PlayStation characters. In Sky Garden it was Ratchet and Rivet of Ratchet & Clank fame, in Construction Derby it was PaRappa the Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy, and then in the boss stage I played it was none other than God of War’s Kratos and Atreus. What’s most exciting is some of these look to be more than just surface-level cameos, with Kratos and son putting the finishing touches on the huge octopus boss, Wako Tako, before shooting off to what seems to be an entire stage dedicated to the world of their games – something I unfortunately wasn’t able to access as part of my preview. I’m very keen to find out more about what’s going on there.

The big battle leading up to this moment was a total blast in itself. What started out as standard pattern-recognition 3D platformer boss fare quickly proved to be more exciting and engaging than that thanks to another of the new gadgets, a pair of adorably frog-themed, extendable boxing gloves that I could operate individually using the left and right triggers, to pummel Wako Tako with as well as swing from certain platforms and fling myself into him for a devastating finisher.

More than anything I’d seen yet, this was the moment in the demo that proved just how visually and musically spectacular Astro Bot is shaping up to be, as well. Things are high-fidelity, sure, but more than that it’s all animated with a ridiculous amount of personality and energy. ASOBI is cooking in a way that I would absolutely expect of Nintendo if it had access to the power of the PS5’s hardware. And it’s the sheer number of bespoke, one-and-done details and flourishes that really drive home the care being put into this thing. If what I’ve seen is the kind of standard that can be expected through the entire game, it’ll truly be something special. I’m especially pleased to report that the soundtrack is somehow even more bop-worthy than Astro’s Playroom’s even this early on.

After churning my way through two full stages and a boss, all that was left was to tackle two of Astro Bot’s “challenge stages,” which are succinct and abstract little tests of platforming prowess that exist to deliver some added spice to players that feel ready for it. The first of these, titled Swinging Sentries, pushed my platforming coordination and timing to the limit in a race to save Naughty Dog’s legendary Jak, while Slowdown Showdown handed me the means to very briefly freeze enemies and osbtacles in place and clear a path with the tightest of margins on my way to save Journey’s Traveler. It’s great to see that there’ll be excitement to find for all ages and skill levels, and these harder moments were welcome proof of how fluid and tight Astro’s core platforming is.

And really it all comes back to that initial concept – joy. I couldn’t show you even 30 seconds during my time with Astro Bot that didn’t feature something new and exciting for me to see or do. It’s a celebration of what makes 3D platformers so compelling as much as it is a celebration of all things PlayStation, and powered by the platform’s new de facto mascot it’s entirely emblematic of the sheer wonder to be found in video games. If the final product has me grinning and cheering even half as consistently as these handful of stages did, it’ll be tough for anything to beat Astro Bot out as the most joyful game of the year.

A new PlayStation 5 firmware update is rolling out now, bringing with it a handful of small but useful updates, along with one particularly exciting one – the ability to join Discord voice calls directly from the console.

The feature will mean that players can bring up their Discord chats directly from the Control Centre menu on their console jump into one, without having to touch their phone or another device to initiate anything. PlayStation says that the feature will roll out to various regions over the coming weeks, with Japan/Asia first followed by Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the Middle East and then the Americas.

Another feature that’s rolling out now is profile sharing from the PS5 console or PlayStation App, allowing players to generate a shareable link or QR code to their PlayStation profile to share on other services.

The firmware update enabling the new features as they gradually roll out is already available, and includes the following changes:

Team Asobi has already confirmed that Astro Bot, its upcoming full-fledged 3D platformer starring PlayStation’s de facto mascot, will be getting free DLC not long after it launches on September 6th this year.

Talking to IGN following a recent round of media previews at Summer Game Fest, the studio’s head, Nicolas Doucet, revealed that there are plans to add the free DLC to Astro Bot “soon” after launch. Doucet said this DLC would add more challenge levels to the game among other things.

A couple of the base game’s challenge levels were a part of the SGF demos, and they’re focused on rescuing specific bots dressed as iconic PlayStation characters, meaning this DLC has a good chance of adding even more cameos over and above the promised 150 at launch. It’ll be interesting to see just how expansive the game becomes over time, if the studio is able to commit to adding more and more free DLC.

Shannon wrote in his hands-on preview of the game, “Probably the most interesting part of the demo was how it ends, and I suspect will have a bigger part in how the game ends up, with Kratos and Atreus giving the boss the final blow, and then appearing on the level map as their own icon, implying that you’re able to visit them. Astro’s Playroom remains my favourite next-gen feeling experience to date, taking advantage of all of the DualSense features and bringing together over 25 years of PlayStation history, so I was extremely eager to see how Astro Bot, a fully-fledged standalone game would expand and improve on the experience.

Unlike Astro’s Playroom which was laid out in parts, Astro Bot is structured much more like a traditional platformer, split into worlds and levels that see Astro trying to build his PS5 mothership, and get back all of the parts that have been lost.

I got to experience three levels and two challenge levels from the game that were clearly laid out to show off a number of the game’s gadgets as well how things differ from Playroom.

Each level starts with Astro gliding into the stage on his little DualSense ship, with this being a moment to take advantage of the gyroscope functionality of the controller. For anyone that played Playroom, the core gameplay will feel extremely familiar with Astro having a one-hit death in general levels  but there’s a few key differences.

The first is that whilst there’s still 300 bots to collect from PlayStation’s history, they’ve now been grouped by games into level, so for instance in the first level I was collecting Ratchet & Rivet, whilst the second was based on Parappa the Rappa characters, and challenge levels were based on rescuing Jak and The Traveller from Journey. There’s also puzzle pieces to collect in each level although how they’ll tie into the game wasn’t immediately clear.

The second major change is through the introduction of new power-ups which you unlock at a certain point in each level. These feel like Mario Odyssey in the sense that they’re introduced for moments to change up the gameplay and help you solve particular puzzles within the level.

The three that I got to experience was a balloon power-up that allowed Astro to get to higher areas, the second was the Dog rocket that was featured in the trailer which was used to get to further away ledges and take down certain enemies, and the last was extendable boxing gloves that allowed me to traverse and grab things from afar.

Whilst this was a quick demo and clearly designed to show off a range of these gadgets, I’m excited to see how they evolve and are used together among the 80 levels, my hope is that you’ll be needed to backtrack and use them to access earlier parts of the levels that were previously locked off in order to find bots and puzzle pieces.

Again, this only was a few levels, but it’s clear that there’s a lot more personality in the levels as well, with them feeling a lot more expansive and ever changing with a lot more hidden areas as you make your way through. One of the levels in particular was a construction zone with a lot of moving parts, and it felt super dynamic and visually stunning.

Outside of the core levels, there’s a boss battle at the end of each world. The one that I got to experience was the octopus level from the trailer. This took part across three waves that felt like a traditional boss battle in the sense that it kept upping the anti, but the final wave really impressed me as it cleverly transformed the stage into a platforming component.

There’s also a number of challenge levels that are based on the PlayStation symbols. These are smaller levels that have you getting from point A to point B and are super tough to complete. These riff on another gadget or component from the game, such as a slowdown mechanic that was used to get past the next wave of enemies as quickly as possible. One of the challenge levels that I got experience was already present in the level select screen, whilst the other dynamically appeared as a little shooting star that I had to chase down in my DualSense speeder.

It seems as though PlayStation was happy with the way Arrowhead’s hugely-popular Helldivers 2 was priced in the market, because it’s next big upcoming multiplayer shooter, Concord, is following suit.

First revealed via the Australian PlayStation Store of all places, the game is priced identically to Helldivers 2 with a $59.95 digital standard edition and a $94.95 Digital Deluxe Edition.

The digital deluxe version of the game will come with 16 character skins, and up to three days early access to the game which officially launches on August 24th for PS5 and PC, while pre-orders in general earn a “Monarch Pack” DLC and early beta access for a group of up to five players. It’s also been confirmed that new heroes, game modes, maps and worlds, and weekly cinematic vignettes will come at no additional cost.

It’s clear that this sort of pricing worked wonders for Arrowhead’s game when it launched earlier this year, making it much more accessible and better reflecting the scope of the game, though the actual fun of gameplay and novel community engagement around Helldivers 2 are arguably what helped it sell in the tens of millions of copies. The jury will obviously be out on Concord in that regard until it drops.

Easily the most exciting reveal during this morning’s PlayStation State of Play was a brand-new, fully-fledged Astro Bot 3D platformer headed to PlayStation 5 on September 6th this year.

Aside from looking like an adorably-good time, the announcement trailer showed us that the game will continue the tradition of being packed full of PlayStation references from iconic characters to consoles and accessories.

This morning saw the arrival of a big new PlayStation State of Play presentation, and with it a heap of new trailers and updates on games for PS5 and PS VR2, including some exciting stuff coming later this year.

One of those updates was another look at the PS5 and PC version of the Supermassive Games’ much-loved PS4 horror title, Until Dawn. The game is being rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 by the team at Ballistic Moon and will include new and improved animations to expand on the original character performances, as well as better looking character models, environments and VFX.

The announcement didn’t give too much else away, aside from revealing that the game will launch in Spring 2024 for the two new platforms along with a short new gameplay trailer which you can check out below:

V Rising, the hugely-popular open-world vampire survival action RPG that recently had its 1.0 launch on PC after a couple of years of early access, has now secured a release date for its PlayStation version – and the wait isn’t all that long.

Launching on June 11th for PS5, console gamers will finally get the chance to sink their teeth into the massive title, where they’ll spend their nights hunting for blood, slaying powerful bosses and building their own vampiric castle. If you’re yet to give it a go, it’s a super solid experience and one that’s been so successful it’s even spawned a Castlevania crossover.

Along with the announcement of the release date, developer Stunlock Studios has also revealed three different versions that the game will launch with on PS5. Aside from the standard edition at $59.95 on the PlayStation Store, there will also be a special Legacy of Castlevania Edition for $90.95 and a Complete Edition for $150.95, with all three offering a 10% discount for pre-ordering before launch.

It looks like Sony is finally going to start adding more retro PS2 titles to its offering of PlayStation Classics for those with a PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription, after a new title was unearthed by the PS Deals website, which has a knack for revealing things ahead of time as it scrapes the PlayStation Store’s backend.

The game in question is 2002’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars for PS2, with the revealed PlayStation Store listing already containing a heap of details including that the game will come with similar enhanced features to the PS1 and PSP games already in the Classics lineup, like up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters.

Of course, a limited number of PS2 games are already available for PS4 after Sony began making an effort early in that console’s life cycle to re-release some titles, and these are already a part of the PlayStation Plus Deluxe catalogue, but it looks as though now they’ll be properly converted and tested for PS5 as well as PS4 using the same technology as the PS1/PSP Classics. Many of the current PS2 games like Ape Escape 2 are quite broken when played on the newer console, so this is great news.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is listed with a June 11th release date, which also suggests it could be part of the next wave of PlayStation Plus/PlayStation Plus Deluxe titles.

Before the plastic instrument video game phase has begun to die out back in the very early 2010s, Ubisoft saw an opportunity to offer the natural next step and get people playing actual guitars in front of their TVs, and thus Rocksmith was born. Although it followed a similar overall format as the Guitar Heros and Rock Bands, the fact that it used real instruments and you could plug in just about any guitar and also learn while you were playing made it quite novel.

The series dipped for a bit while people started to well and truly pack up their virtual bands, but more recently in 2022, Ubisoft launched “Rocksmith+” which reimagined the idea as a subscription service with an even heavier focus on the educational side of things and support for piano.

While it launched for PC via Ubisoft Connect in 2022 and then last year on mobile, now more players than ever can pick up an instrument and get playing with Rocksmith+ officially coming to PlayStation and Steam next month on June 6th.

Curious potential players on these new platforms will be able to download and play a free trial with limited access to the over 9000 available songs, and assuming the experience on PlayStation is similar to that on PC connection will be done either by MIDI/USB or the official Real Tone Cable which can be picked up at JB Hi-Fi here.

With the news of Rocksmith+ expanding, and the recent launch of Fortnite Festival and PDP’s The Riffmaster, it’s an exciting time for those of us with fond memories of jamming out in the loungeroom to Hotel California.

In my review of The Riffmaster I said, “The Riffmaster might seem niche with the glory days of plastic instruments far behind us, but for those that are still committed – or looking forward to support in Fortnite Festival – it’s a superbly well-designed and performant bit of kit that has a heap of potential. If you can stomach the $200 ticket price, you’re in for a heck of a show.”

It’s been a few weeks since we’d heard much of anything about the rumoured PS5 Pro that’s widely believed to be launching later this year, and after those most recent reports basically blew the lid open on what this new mid-generation refresh might be capable of, the video game graphics experts at Digital Foundry have just released a new report that sheds some extra light on its curious apparent GPU configuration.

Addressing the earlier revelation that the PS5 Pro’s GPU might actually have a lower clock speed than the existing PS5 (2.18GHz vs 2.23GHz), Digital Foundry has claimed to have seen new information that suggests it’ll actually ship with the ability to boost clock speeds above what was possible before, up to 2.35GHz. These numbers might seem incremental, but paired with the new configuration and supposed bumps up in other areas the new Pro console should deliver between 33.5 and 36.1 teraflops of performance versus the 10.23 teraflops of the original PS5.

This new information like won’t change a lot about the real-world performance difference in the Pro, with a 45% overall increase seemingly still the belief. It does introduce some new, more particular details like double GPU caches accomodating higher ray-tracing performance and support for more modern DirectX12 Ultimate features like hardware variable rate shading and hybrid MSAA, all of which should mean meaningful visual and performance improvements in games built with the new console in mind.

Again, it really does need to be reiterated that we still don’t know for sure if any of this will turn out to be factual until Sony says it from its own mouth, but when trusted outlets like Digital Foundry are picking up and heavily reporting on this stuff it’s really seeming like a sure thing at this stage.

PlayStation has revealed that it’s working on an update to the PS5’s multiplayer ecosystem to make it even easier to share your online sessions and have others join them.

The new features will allow players to create QR links to online games that can be shared across any social media or messaging platform, and joined by others even if they’re not already friends on the PlayStation Network. It’ll mean that you can organise games from within things like group chats or on your social feeds and pop a link right there for everyone else to jump right into.

There’s also a new, unique widget coming for Discord that makes PS5 session invites dynamic with the active status displayed right there in the channel so you can see if a shared game is live, how many players are on and join right from the widget.

PlayStation says that some games may need a small update to fully enable all of this functionality, but that it’ll work with developers on the best solution.

Another new social feature dropping in the months to come is the ability to share PlayStation Network accounts on any social or messaging app by generating a link from the PlayStation App, PS5 console or PlayStation website.

Slime Rancher 2 is finally making its way to PS5 on June 11th, after it first launched back in 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X|S in Early Access.

Interestingly, while the easy assumption is that PS5 players have been waiting longer for Slime Rancher 2 due to Sony’s lack of support for “Early Access” releases on PlayStation, developer Monomi Park seemingly implies that this version of the game will still be an Early Access product. The description reads, “All purchases of the PlayStation 5 version include all previous and future content updates leading up to the game’s full release for no additional cost.”

Eager players who want to get in even sooner are also able to start playing the game on June 7th with a digital pre-order, making it an Early Early Access launch. The game is available to pre-order now on the PlayStation Store either as a standalone game for $44.95 or in a bundle with the original Slime Rancher for $67.95. You can find them both here.

Stellar Blade is finally out today on PS5, and while reviews for the game that dropped yesterday have already given it plenty of praise, it’s already gotten some welcome improvements in the hours since with a day one update that adds the previously-promised New Game+ mode, including new costumes, skills and more.

As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Stellar Blade’s New Game+ update not only allows players who finish the game to take up a second playthrough with their character progression intact, but adds a huge 34 new outfits to the game along with new gear levels and skills to aid in the fight against even stronger enemies.

Developer SHIFT UP has also separately revealed on social media that input timing and responsiveness in combat have been tightened up, and extra toggles have been added to the game’s settings for the chromatic aberration and grain noise effects.

If you’re an owner or have access via a subscription, you should now be able to download the new version for free, although it does appear that only the PlayStation Plus Extra version of the game is eligible for the upgrade and not the previously-available PlayStation Plus Collection version.

Original Story: It’s been a long time coming, but with Fallout fever at a high right now thanks to the Prime Video series that debuted yesterday, Bethesda has finally announced plans to drop its much-anticipated current-gen update for 2015’s Fallout 4.

The free update update is coming on April 25th and will bring native versions of the game to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and will also offer a number of improvements including Performance and Quality modes that target 60FPS and increased resolutions, as well as improvements to stability and gameplay fixes.

Fallout 4 for PS4 and Xbox One will also be getting an update that includes stability improvements and fixes, and on PC players will be getting widescreen and ultra-widescreen support along with a number of other fixes. The game will also be coming to the Epic Games Store for the first time, and will become Steam Deck Verified.

The announcement is light on any other details, but there will be new Creation Club content available for free alongside this update as well, which includes some Enclave-related gear, a goofy makeshift weapon pack and some Halloween decorations.

Set in Los Angeles a whole 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse, Fallout follows Lucy (played by Ella Purnell) as she steps out of Vault 33 into the unknown and unhinged world above.

Update: This newest PS5 system update has now landed, bringing the Community Game Help feature to all players.

As previously revealed, this new featured builds on the PS5’s unique existing Game Help system to further enrich available content by automatically adding in footage from other players who’ve opted in to be contributors, meaning even more help will be on tap in supported games.

The way it works, is after opting in, the system will automatically capture and upload videos in supported games where you’ve completed an activity featured in Game Help, and then those videos go to moderation before potentially being added to the game’s help menu for all players to see. There’s a maximum of four uploads per month, and you can lower it further if you’d like, so you won’t be blasting out videos every minute and chewing up your bandwidth/storage if you’re keen to get involved.

The update also adds an option in Remote Play to get ride of annoying status messages as well as brings more of the classic “improved system software performance and stability.” You can see the full update notes below:

Original Story: One of the PS5 software’s more unique features, and one that’s been a part of the console since it launched in 2020, is Game Help. This feature enabled developers to include game tips, video hints, collectable and trophy guides and more for their games, all with built into the PS5 UI to make for quick access.

Now, PlayStation has revealed a major new update for Game Help that’s slated to launch later this year, called Community Game Help. It’ll build on the existing system to further enrich Game Help content by automatically adding in footage from other players who’ve opted in to be contributors, meaning even more help will be on tap in supported games.

PlayStation says that Community Game Help will start to roll out to select games later this year, with the goal to expand it to as many titles as possible in the future. If you are already familiar with the current Game Help experience, Community Game Help will be largely similar. If you find yourself in a tricky situation and need help, press the PS button to open the Control Center and look for an Action Card with the “Hints inside” icon.

In addition to the developer-generated hints that are currently provided in supported games, you will eventually start to see hints labeled “Community Game Help”, which indicates that the clip was generated from other players’ gameplay footage. You can also rate the usefulness of these hints, which will allow us to curate informative help content for players.

Game Help is currently available on PlayStation App, so you can also use your mobile device to access these hints without taking space on your game screen.

How to contribute to Community Game Help

If you enjoy sharing your gaming expertise with others and are willing to contribute to Community Game Help, you can participate by opting in from the Settings menu.* You can also opt out any time, which will remove all of your published videos from Community Game Help. These settings will become available within the next few months, so please stay tuned for more information.

Hot off of its earlier report that went into the most detail we’ve seen yet on what is widely believed to be a pretty accurate set of leaks regarding a “PS5 Pro” console, The Verge has come back again with another set of claims.

This time, it’s expanded on some of what we heard earlier in the week around the idea of a PS5 Pro Enhanced label for games and how developers are apparently actively gearing up to start getting Pro-ready games out this year. In addition to what it’s said about games getting a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label, The Verge now also reports that Sony is hoping to implement an “ultra-boost” mode that will offer performance gains even for games that haven’t been specifically developed or updated to take advantage of the more capable hardware.

This supposed ultra-boost setting sounds like it’ll work in a similar way to what we had on the PS4 Pro, optionally layering on some of the newer console’s extra grunt to smooth out variable framerates and resolutions in games that can take advantage. For example, a game with a 60FPS cap that doesn’t consistently hit it might now reach that consistently, or a game with a dynamic resolution up to 4K might spend more time actually running at 4K.

What it won’t do is change anything about games that are locked at a certain framerate and already hit it consistently or create an increase in fidelity in games that run at a fixed resolution, unless a developer decides to update their game with enhancements for the Pro.

The outlet also says that Sony is asking developers working on new titles or updating old ones to create a specific graphical mode within their games for the PS5 Pro. This mode should apparently combine upscaling to 4K resolution with Sony’s new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and ray-tracing features into one package, presumably this will be an added option in addition to the usual “Performance” and “Quality” type settings that can only be seen and/or enabled on a PS5 Pro console.

Again, it really does need to be reiterated that we still don’t know for sure if any of this will turn out to be factual until Sony says it from its own mouth, but when trusted outlets like The Verge are picking up and heavily reporting on this stuff it’s really seeming like a sure thing at this stage.

Rumblings that a souped-up PS5 Pro console could be launching in 2024 have gained traction once again after The Verge’s Tom Warren has claimed to have obtained a list of full specs for the upcoming mid-generation refresh from unnamed sources.

Not only that, but the senior editor’s sources have also claimed that developers are being encouraged to start working on PS5 Pro enhancements now, with a focus on improved ray-tracing features and with certifications beginning in just a few months time.

“I understand developers are able to order test kits right now and that Sony is expecting every game submitted to certification in August to be compatible with the PS5 Pro,” Warren says in his report, suggesting that the first slate of PS5 Pro-certified games could certainly be launching as early as this year.

The report also says that the existing PS5 console will continue on alongside the Pro model and that Sony expects developers to offer a single game SKU for titles moving forward that works across both.

Reiterating what prior claims have suggested, Warren says that the biggest bump in spec for the PS5 Pro is in the GPU, which is around 45% faster than standard PS5. It’ll also possess improved ray-tracing architecture and be supported by PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution or PSSR, Sony’s own frame generation/upscaling technology that takes advantage of a new “custom architecture for machine learning” on the Pro.

On the CPU side, as previously reported, it’s the same CPU as the standard PS5 but now allows for a special high-frequency mode that can take allocate a slightly higher portion of power to the CPU for about a 10% bump up in speed, at the expense of a roughly 1% drop in performance from the GPU (according to Sony). This could come in handy for titles that are though to be largely CPU-limited like Dragon’s Dogma, where the extra GPU overhead – even reduced by 1% – plus stronger CPU performance could potentially smooth out the experience considerably.

Devs will allegedly also get access to more of the PS5’s system memory and at higher speeds, bumping up from 12.5GB allocated to games on the standard PS5 to 13.7GB and at a 28% higher speed of 576GB/s.

All of this pretty much lines up perfectly with what’s already been outlined by sites like Insider Gaming, although one of the earliest supposed leakers of the PS5 Pro, Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube, has had their video removed thanks to a copyright claim. Do with that information what you will:

The post The PS5 Pro Seems Closer Than Ever With Developers Reportedly Getting Their Games Ready appeared first on Press Start.

Sure, the discourse may have been eventually been clouded by arguments over whether or not it could be considered an “indie” game (something the creators have since cleared up), but there’s no denying Dave the Diver made quite the splash last year when it launched for PCs and then eventually the Nintendo Switch. Now, carrying on the inexplicable tradition of well-loved smaller efforts rocking up much later on PlayStation devices, the game is ready to set sail for PS5 and PS4. And unsurprisingly, it’s still very good.

If you’re one of those who’ve been holding out for this release and have not already had the pleasure of the dive (or the Dave), what’s here is a deceptively simple concept. As the titular Dave, you’re called on by the enigmatic but talented Chef Bancho for an important job – help his new waterfront sushi restaurant flourish by diving for fresh marine protein by day and managing the eatery by night. These two distinct types of gameplay form the core loop, with money from the restaurant funding better diving equipment to catch more exotic fish, in turn creating new and increasingly gourmet dishes to raise the profile and income of the restaurant and create new business opportunities like interior renovations and a bigger staff.

The thing that makes Dave the Diver truly special though, is that this, admittedly already-addictive, initial loop is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The deeper you go, literally and figuratively, the more layers you begin to uncover and the weirder things get. There’s more in these seas than just fish, after all, and more to the people you’ll meet above the surface than just hungry patrons looking for the next plate of delicious sushi. I’d hate to give too much away for anyone that’s managed to come in completely fresh, but there’s a reason Dave the Diver can sustain itself for a good 20-30 hour runtime and continue to surprise and delight the entire way through.

This game’s been out a while though, and there are countless other in-depth reviews you can read if you’re looking for more than a surface-level report on just how wacky this game can be, especially in the absurd things that characters say and the sheer detail packed into some of its playable gags. What you’re more likely here for is a few words on how Dave the Diver fares on PlayStation consoles, and after staying up many nights way longer than I should’ve recently, I think I can help with that.

The good, obvious news is, the game still slaps like a wet fish in the face. The experience is intact, and naturally looks and performs wonderfully on the PS5 where I spent my time playing it. Dave’s endearing combination of pixel art character models, simple 3D environments and lots of lovely effects goes down a treat in razor-sharp detail on a big telly, as do all of the incredible one-off retro-animated sequences you’ll discover as you do new things. In any other hands the weird grab bag of different visual elements here could have gone belly-up but it’s all just off-kilter enough to make it wonderfully compelling. The same goes for the soundtrack full of earworms and the Animal Crossing-esque dialogue.

And of course, there are some neat PS5-exclusive embellishments to be found here. At first I wasn’t entirely sure if a game that prides itself on lo-fi visuals and simple moment-to-moment gameplay really needs “immersive” DualSense features, but over time I’ve really grown to appreciate that extra little bit of tactility. Feeling the tug of a harpooned fish adds a bit of a thrill to the catch, and after a few hours you’ll start to notice the subtle difference in feel between different bits of gear that gives it a nice bit of extra (sorry) depth. Phone calls and camera snaps also come through the controller’s speaker, and pouring green tea or beer even offers some weirdly-calming feedback. The loading times between some areas also seem to have been brought under control here, at least on PS5.

It’s also a great fit for the PlayStation Portal, where the tiniest touch of latency and some occasionally tiny fish aren’t total dealbreakers. I’ve spent countless hours sitting in bed or rugged up on the couch on a cold morning just diving for fish and treasures on my Portal and it’s been bloody lovely. It’s no small wonder this game was so popular on Switch and the good ol’, Steam Deck.

The original House Flipper certainly didn’t create the hugely-popular subgenre of games that simulate the mundanity of hands-on labour, but it definitely feels like one of the first to really capture a broad audience of players from all corners of the market. For whatever reason, it just had the right mix of player expression, progression and banal busywork to keep people engaged and even birth dedicated communities of decorators eager to share the fruits of their craft.

There’s no denying there were a few creaks in the boards though, even with the good amount of support and DLC expansions it’s received since. Fast forward five years then, and House Flipper 2 debuted in 2023 on PC, bringing with it renovations across the board from gameplay improvements to an expanded Story mode, more modern and cohesive visuals and an exciting new Sandbox mode. While those with the required rigs have been flipping up a storm for a few months now, it’s finally time for console players to step through the doors, tools in hand and start knocking down some walls.

Playing on PS5, my first impressions of House Flipper 2 were that of familiarity. If you’ve played the original, this isn’t a huge departure, and why would it be? But kicking things off in the game’s Story mode the updates slowly begin to reveal themselves. 

For starters, there’s a little more structure to progression in HF2 that’s backed up by a more intentional story and sense of place. In this game, you’re a returning resident of the town of Pinnacove, a coastal retreat full of folks that need help with everything from cleaning to unpacking, shopfitting and full-on renovations, and of course plenty of houses to flip. Your ultimate goal is to make enough of a name for yourself that the town hands you the keys to the “Ugliest House in Pinnacove” to turn into a dream community centre, which is a far more pleasant thing to be working toward than simply getting rich off of real estate.

The pacing of this core mode has also been updated to offer a better sense of progression. You’ll still get new jobs via email and gradually unlock your full suite of tools as you come up against new challenges, but the way these are designed and the slowly-doled-out Perk Points that let you augment your different tools as you use them more all feel a lot more thoughtfully-paced and better to gradually learn and expand your skill set from. A heap of the jobs also involved unboxing residents’ possessions and decorating with them, Unpacking-style, which gives everything a nice personal touch that fits in with the community-focused vibe of Pinnacove.

The objectives in each job are managed by Quests, which are room-based goals that show you what tools are needed in each part of a property and where you need to use them, whether it’s removing stains and garbage or painting walls or even buying and placing furniture. It’s very guided, but works wonderfully as a way to build your confidence in how everything functions before you start buying properties that you need to fix up without any sort of guidance after you’ve hammered and nailed your way through the 10-15 hour main campaign jobs.

Much like the first game, those few hours will be quickly eclipsed by how much time you’ll spend meticulously building and decorating once you’re let loose and comfortable with the full range of tools. These games go way beyond just painting and polishing, letting you build and break down walls, purchase and customise a huge amount of fixtures and furniture and really just live your dreams of being a contestant on The Block. There are a ton of quality-of-life improvements in this sequel to make things both more manageable and more flexible, and for the most part it all controls wonderfully on console. Fiddly object placement and menus that support both d-pad and cursor-based input but don’t commit fully to either are probably my biggest gripes.

Probably the best addition here though is the Sandbox mode, which finally lets players build and decorate a home entirely from scratch, floor plan and all. This is where dozens upon dozens of hours will truly be lost, and where players will no doubt start to truly appreciate just how intricate you can get with everything and how much more flexible all the systems are. Just the act of carefully placing cutlery in drawers or stocking fridges has had me glued for entire afternoons (and it’s a godsend that you can now move furniture or boxes with other objects in/on them). The PC community has already rallied around this massively, and being able to share your Sandbox creations with others (and even create your own quests) is a huge part of that.

The whole game looks great, too, not just in the sense of the sharp and performant visuals on PS5 but because everything in House Flipper 2 feels much more intentionally designed. Gone are the dull, store-bought and “photorealistic” assets along with barebones interfaces, replaced with a far more cohesive and visually distinct aesthetic, more original catalogue of objects, nicely-rendered materials and an attractive UX that helps sell the whole concept. The only presentational caveat is the music, which should be immediately switched off in favour of your own soundtrack. Or just silence, which would still be better than the grating and repetitive score on offer here.

At the end of the day, the true testament to how good House Flipper 2’s simulation of household work is, is how much of my actual home chores are being done in the meantime. Looking around me right now, I’d say this game has more than nailed the brief. Your tolerance for spending hours painting individual beams and counters is naturally going to have a huge impact on your enjoyment of a game like this, but if the idea speaks to you, it’s all right here.

Rare has announced that a Closed Beta for the upcoming PS5 version of its long-running and previously Xbox and PC-exclusive piracy sim, Sea of Thieves, is kicking off this weekend and will grant exclusive rewards for those who dare to chart its waters.

The Sea of Thieves PS5 Closed Beta will set sail at 7PM AEST on Friday, April 12th and run until the same time on April 15th. You’ll need to pre-order any edition of the game on the PlayStation Store in order to get access, but playing Sea of Thieves on PS5 during the Closed Beta will net you the Dauntless Adventurer sails and title to use in the full game (and exclusively on the PS5 version) when it launches on April 30th and prove your dedication to the PlayStation pirate’s life.

Sea of Thieves players on PS5 can expect parity with the Xbox version, meaning a 4K mode that is designed to run at 60FPS, as well as a high-performance 120Hz mode that’s scaled down to 1080p resolution. One added benefit players will have on Sony’s console is compatibility with the DualSense controller’s unique features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as well as the built-in microphone and speaker for chatting to fellow pirates even without a proper headset.

Account-wise, players will be able to carry across their pirate from the Xbox/PC versions of the game thanks to a (required) Microsoft account sign-in, including all of their progress aside from an odd few platform-exclusive cosmetic items. Some of the game’s 60 base trophies will also automatically unlock based on previous progress, though Rare says not all achievements will automatically convert, and more trophies will be added to match the staggering 250+ on other platforms.

While the idea of single-player, AAA games suddenly switching on basketfuls of microtransactions on launch remains a somewhat-warm topic, an interview with Stellar Blade developers SHIFT UP has caught some attention online thanks to the mention of the game’s post-launch support and the lack of paid microtransactions.

The interview happened with Korean outlet, Ruliweb, just prior to the game’s free demo dropping on the Playstation Store, but has more recently been picked up by the wider internet after popular X account, Genki, shared a snippet of it.

In the interview, which covers over a number of topics, the team is asked about DLC and post-launch support for Stellar Blade, with general director Hyeong-tae Kim confirming that there won’t be any paid microtransactions on offer. Further to that, the studio is planning to offer updates after launch that add new costumes for protagonist EVE for free, along with gameplay additions like a New Game+ mode.

The only exception to this would be if the studio teamed up with other creators to launch outfits based on external IP, which would likely come with a fee.

“We want to make it clear at this point that Stellar Blade will not require any additional expenses that gamers are not aware of beyond what they paid for the package,” Kim confirmed (translation by Genki). “The only exception is if we create collaboration costumes with another company’s IP, those may be sold for a fee. Also, there is no New Game+ in the launch version, so please look forward to it being updated very soon.”
