Thomas Hearns vs Roberto Duran June 15, 1984 Caesars Palace

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 posted by admin

WBC Superwelterweight Champion Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns fights WBA Jr. Middleweight Champion Roberto Duran. Both were 154 pound Champion, although Roberto was stripped of his title for fighting Tommy. Two legends meet. I am not sure which broadcast this was. Normally the Gil Clancy/Tim Ryan video is shown. I think this is Bert Sugar as one of the commentators

This fight really surprised me. I thought of Duran as crafty, tough fighter who would be able to get inside Tommy’s reach and take him apart with body blows and counters. This was a lot like Hearns’ demolition of Cuevas some years earlier. The only fighter whom I recall being able to take such right from Hearns was Hagler in the opening moments of their first round. What a punch!

tommy took him apart big time i didnt relies the age differants between them tommy being 7 years younger but what a fight class

that was one HELL OF A RIGHT HAND

Don’t think there will ever been a punch delivered with more blinding speed than that hearns knockout blow…its like some superhero shit.

  9. nastynas4eva says:

yea i think it was a mismatch..but duran had real balls taking this fight,,,its like todays ducking fighters like pacman or floyd taking on paul the punisher ….back in the days fighters had some balls

If Hearns had a stronger foundation (legs), he would never have lost a single fight. He was awesome.

  11. TheWhitehall says:

Hearns just too fast and strong for Duran.

I loved watching both of these of two boxers
    Hearns was on fire here..

Pacmans awesome in this day and would have gave any of the old timers a hard time but if he was in the ring on this night with hearns and pac how he is now i think Hearns would win..

I dont care for any of that tho i just like watching the skill of good boxers compete..

I love what famous people do for us.

    The memories.. good days

  14. Nihawmah says:

to be honest this was a mismatch!

Hearns had the outrageous height and arm length advantage!
It was obvious that Duran had a tough time just reaching Hearns with a jab.

Tommy was the epitome of a true champ. If he lost he came back fair and square. He did not pull the bull shit games like Leonard did. Waiting for opponents to get ring worn, or negotiate so he would have an advantage.

    2 of my favorite hitters…
Devastating, the only guy to ever really whip Roberto’s ass… I think he could have cut Tommy down to size in close with body shots,,, but,,,woulda, coulda, shoulda don’t cut it, Tommy was THE MAN that night.

Tommy; you are my favorite boxer of all time.I am not saying youare the best, but you gave me so much pleasure when you boxed.Tommy;have a long and happy life, thanks for the excitement skill and rolercoaster ride you gave us,especially the Roldan fight…..Tommy Hearns::: Legend.

That right started somewhere in the mid Atlantic and finished somewhere in the Pacific. Awesome.

  19. jakdariipa says:

Cmon people i like pac-man too way BEFORE the band-wagon came around and Duran would wear him down and get the KO And Hearns Would Completely Demolish him…EASY

  20. Rockinintomordor says:

Damn, that man’s got lightning arms. Left hits from the hitman stance are just short of full-blown smashes.

  21. TheGreeneRoom says:

There’s no way Duran doesn’t still feel that punch each time the Sandman kisses him goodnight these days.

  22. SirHappyThe1st says:

In the whole of his career Duran could never cope with boxers with fast hands.

    Hearns is awesome

  23. scottmc316 says:

the height differencial as well as the reach was ridiculous, watch the distance Hearns can land jabs on Duran ! As long as Hearns threw from distance he couldn’t lose this fight, was a bad matchup for Duran style wise. Hearns had just about every advantage in that fight, mismatch.
